About Korpilombolo

The name Korpilombolo is a finnish expression for a lake that is split into two in the wilderness, where a creek is running through. The first settlers came here around 1860 and the first highway from Övertorneå to Korpilombolo was completed around 1860–1870. Fishing, hunting and smallholding became the sources of supply. The municipality was at the highest in the 1950's, with about 4.000 inhabitants, with the forest as the dominant industry. Korplilombolo is today a district of Pajala municipality and has about 550 inhabitants. The population growth has been negatively the last decades but has not stopped. A positive spirit can be discerned of which the Night Festival is a part of.

Korpilombolo is generally known for its imaginative name and the international cultural event European Festival of the Night.
